few firms can claim "experience" when it comes to these most

M1 Group 4 Pro Car/Frank
Stella Art Car

| In 1975 the concept of BMW Art Cars was conceived
with the painting of a BMW 3.0 CSL by Alexander Calder. The
following year BMW commissioned Frank Stella to paint another CSL.
It was driven in the 24 Hours of LeMans by the American Driver
Peter Gregg, Brian Redmond of England, and Frenchman Herve Poulain,
and later at Dijon, France by Ronnie Peterson of
Sweden. When Peterson died 2 years later, Stella created the
art series "Polar Coordinates" in his memory. The
design was applied by Stella to a BMW M1 Pro Car for his friend
and art car driver, Peter Gregg.
This is the only time that one of
the "factory" artists ever created another art car for a
private individual. It is thus a totally unique, rare and
beautiful example of automotive art.
This M1, chassis number 9430 1053
was built in 1979 by BMW Motorsport GmbH to BMW Pro Car Group 4
specifications. A unique feature is the seat covering,
rendered in a Black Watch Tartan patter per Peter Gregg's request
to Jochen Neerspasch. This material was used by Gregg in
many of his race cars.
Peter Gregg died soon after
receiving the car. It was never raced and was kept in storage. The
previous owners were responsible for rescuing the car from
obscurity and decay by having Korman Autoworks restore it to
track-ready condition. They also funded the restoration and public
showings of the car prior to it's donation to the Guggenheim
Museum. Korman is currently charged with maintaining and storing
this unique piece of automotive history so that it can be enjoyed
by future generations.
